Allenby News July 2017

John Dewberry

Welcome to the Summer edition of our quarterly newsletter.

June and July are always hectic months for Allenby – so this is just a sample of what we’ve been up to.

I hope you find something of interest below – I look forward to hearing from you if you think we can help, but meantime, if you’re off on holiday soon, have a great break.

Very best wishes
John Dewberry

Our reviews

Thank you to all those who continue to contribute to our reviews. In the last 3 months we’ve notched up another 25 reviews and maintained our score of 4.89 out of 5. Here’s just a few comments from recent guests:

I was on the recent trip with the Croydon Parkinson’s Group to Bewl Water, and Andy our driver was very helpful, got us there in good time, and brought us back a different route through the countryside and villages which we enjoyed. The coach was comfortable as well.

From when I made the booking with the help of both Linda and John, I knew we were in safe hands. Thank you so much for your efficiency and patience and great driving!

Geoff was considerate and helpful and our parish women’s group would recommended him to anyone.

The coach was clean and comfortable and arrived punctually. Bernard, the driver, was very amicable and drove well.

If you hear of anyone who might need help, we’d be grateful of a mention 🙂

Thank you

On the road

We took:

Emily Ash Trust to Top Shop in Oxford Street
Knights Garden Centre to the Hampton Court Flower Show
Warlingham Probus to Chatham Dockyard
Old Surrey & Burstow Pony Club to the Badminton Horse Trials
Godstone Gardeners on a fantastic selection of trips

Other places we visited this quarter that you might like to take a look at include:

Lingfield Park racecourse
Bluebell Railway
Sheffield Park
Watts Gallery
Southmere Boating Centre

We’ve also taken a few groups of children to Wild Wood and AirHop, both near Guildford

With the wedding season well and truly upon us, we’ve been to church any number of times – and also to a number of other venues such as Falconhurst and Squerryes Court

Finally, we were delighted to be asked to provide transport for the Antiques Roadshow at Nymans Gardens

The next 3 months should be equally action packed – we look forward to updating you next time.

BeefeatersBehind the scenes

OK – so let’s talk about Euro 6 emissions!

Not the most riveting of subjects I know. But actually this is a really rather important piece of legislation.

It’s been 25 years since the ‘Euro 1′ standard required the fitting of catalytic converters to petrol cars, reducing the levels of carbon monoxide being released into the environment.

Euro 6 is the latest in this series of standards and seeks to reduce pollutants such as hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter as well as carbon monoxide.

Needless to say, although these new standards have been expected for a while, it will mean major changes for anyone running their business using on-road vehicles. The mayor of London has put in place legislation that will prevent non-Euro 6 vehicles from entering the congestion zone by 2019. So before too long companies that don’t make changes to their fleet won’t be able to offer trips into London!

Because of our policy of replacing all our vehicles every 3 years, we’ve been choosing to buy Euro 6 vehicles and already more than half of our fleet is compliant with the new Euro 6 emissions legislation. We will be fully compliant by the time the legislation is introduced.

Yes – you can rely on Allenby 🙂

Euro 6 Emissions Legislation and the Future for Coach Hire

It has been 25 years since the ‘Euro 1′ standard required the fitting of catalytic converters to petrol cars, reducing the levels of carbon monoxide being released into the environment. Euro 6 is the latest in this series of standards and seeks to reduce pollutants such as hydrocarbons, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter as well as carbon monoxide.

We spoke to John Dewberry, Managing Director of Allenby Coach Hire, to find out what he thinks of this legislation and how it affects the coach hire industry as a whole.

“We’ve known this has been coming for the last 5 years” explains John. “Because of our policy of replacing all our vehicles every 3 years, we have been choosing to buy Euro 6 vehicles and now more than half of our fleet is compliant with the new Euro 6 emissions legislation.”

Brexit and the May election

John believes that neither Brexit nor the upcoming May election will affect or delay these changes in emissions standards. “If vehicle manufacturers want to sell their products in Europe, or if coach companies want to drive in Europe, they will need to comply with Euro 6.

Also, the mayor of London has put into place legislation that will prevent non-Euro 6 vehicles from entering the congestion zone by 2019. So one way or another, if you run a coach hire company, you will eventually need to replace your fleet.”

Impacts on the coach hire industry

Needless to say, although these new standards have been expected for a while, it will mean major changes for anyone running their business using on-road vehicles. So what impacts will these changes will have on Allenby Coach Hire’s competitors?

“Some coach companies, if they don’t renew their vehicles frequently, will find it impossible to fund the replacement of their fleet. If the business owner is nearing retirement age, perhaps they’ll decide to retire early. Or perhaps they’ll decide not to offer any trips into London” John suggests.

“We’ve had this type of change before though, with Euro 5 and previous iterations, so in general, people will just get on with it” he adds.

The future of coach hire and emissions standards

In John’s opinion, this will be the last round of standards for combustion engine vehicles. “It’s likely that the next wave of changes will require all new vehicles to be electric” states John simply. “The coaches that we’ll buy next April, for instance, will be Euro 6 compliant. But they’ll probably be electric the following year”.

Overall John is positive about such changes and improving the air quality for all. “I think it is necessary to reduce the emissions that are coming out of vehicles on the road. Nobody wants their town full of dirty lorries and cars polluting the air. But it’s a very complex issue” says John.

“Electric cars may produce next to no particulates to get discharged into the air, but how is that electricity being generated? And what is the carbon footprint of making the electrical cars and vans in the first place? We need to have a view on the bigger picture of such environmental initiatives” he points out.

An alternative solution to electric vehicles is already being trialled in London in 2017 – the hydrogen-powered, zero-emission buses made by Wrightbus in Northern Ireland. The London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has committed to buying about 300 zero emission buses by 2020 for use in the capital.

“This technology is the ideal solution, the only byproduct of these machines is water, but they’re too expensive at the moment to be a feasible solution for the vast majority of businesses” John concludes.

One thing is certain, with his finger on the pulse of the future of transportation, John Dewberry will make sure Allenby Coach Hire stays forward-thinking and up to date will all regulations.

Allenby News January 2017

Welcome to the first 2017 edition of our new quarterly newsletter spotlighting just a few of the things we’re been doing over the last 3 months.

As you may have read in the press, we recently decided that it was unacceptable that the good people of Oxted should be unable to get to work because of the rail strikes. So we laid on 3 minibuses in the morning and 3 in the evening to help them out.

And when Southern rail decided they should lay on a replacement bus service, many people still decided to use our minibuses. You can read more about it here Daily Mail and also see a recent news clip here on ITV.

I’d like to thank everyone for their very kind feedback – and take this rather belated opportunity to wish you a happy new year!

Very best wishes
John Dewberry

Our reviews

We are very proud of our reviews. Thank you to all those who have contributed.

Here’s our latest ‘scores on the doors’:

Allenby Coach Hire reviews5 star: 104 reviews
4 star: 8 reviews
2 star: 2 reviews

Here’s what Mark Wright had to say recently:

“Excellent service during the recent southern strike. Its a shame you don’t advertise more widely, I only heard about this via word of mouth”.

It seems that even though Allenby have been in the area for many years, we’re still a bit of an ‘unknown’. So please, if you hear of anyone who might need transport, we’d be grateful of a mention 🙂

Thank you.

In the last 3 months we’ve taken some 51 groups on a wide range of visits. Here’s just a few highlights:

We took the good folk of Yew Tree Court Sanderstead to Le Personne Caterham (pictured)

St Marys Church enjoyed a trip to Oxford for their annual Carol Concert

Limpsfield Riding Club galloped to the Horse of the year show at Olympia
Parks School of Dancing sashayed to Saddlers Wells

…and we took several companies out for their annual ‘bash’

In the last quarter we’ve supported a number of local schools with their ‘usual’ day to day needs, but we’d particularly like to mention:

Sevenoaks school’s hockey match in Norwich
Woldingham’s students as we helped them to get to school during the rail strike
Sevenoaks school’s boarders as they did their Christmas Shopping before they returned home
Downe School on their trip to see Peter Pan at the Churchill Theatre (O no you didn’t – O yes we did)

Behind the scenes

Aeroplanes

Allenby Coach Hire is a team – and it’s a team that works together to consistently deliver a reliable, presentable and friendly service.

This quarter, I’d like to pay tribute to the team using the words of just a few of our happy customers:

“From the first ‘phone call to Linda, Allenby’s staff were very courteous and efficient. The coach was of a very high standard and Bernard, the driver, was very helpful and friendly to all our guests”

“The booking was efficiently handled. The trip itself (to Glyndebourne) was a great success: the driver, Barry, was very considerate to the group (eg enquiring whether anyone needed a wc stop en-route). A good driver and excellent timings throughout”

“First class service from driver Geoff. On time at all points, very reliable”

“From start to finish I can’t fault Allenby Coach Hire. Very amenable, excellent communication and on the day, our coach driver, Andy, was very polite and helpful. All round, a great Company to work with”

and finally…

“It is very easy to book coaches with Allenby. All the team are so helpful and all the drivers are very friendly”

Take a bow, all pilots and ground crew

Southern Rail Replacement Service

Southern Rail Strike Replacement Service is On!

Oxted – Sevenoaks non-Southern Rail Replacement

This is to confirm that we will be running our rail replacement service on the 10th, 11th and 13 January 2017.

Due to the alternative service being organised by Southern and the expected lower demand we will only be running the 7am and 7pm coaches,

We may add additional coaches if there’s an increase in demand – there would need to be a minimum of 6 people confirmed for us to implement an additional run.

The 7am and 7pm coaches will run irrespective of numbers.

The details

Pick up point: outside Sainsbury’s Oxted High Street (the Southern service will run from the cinema side)

Cost: £10.00 each way

Payment: to the driver before the start of the journey

Booking: must be made in advance. Please make your bookings either on our Facebook page or enquiries@allenbycoachhire.co.uk.

We wish everybody the best of luck with next week!

Southern Rail Replacement Service

January Southern Rail Strikes – Coach Service from Oxted to Sevenoaks

Here’s the latest information about Allenby Coach Hire’s commuter run to Sevenoaks.

We have been hired by Southern to provide a coach service from 06.08 to 20.55 with other coach companies also being hired in. This service will be free of charge as far as we know.

We are also being approached by customers who used us during the last disruption saying that they would still prefer to use us, using the system we had in place last time. This would involve a payment of £10.00 per trip.

We are happy to offer this but obviously we run the risk of people using the free service and us not being required.

We are sending this post out to gauge whether there is enough of a demand for our pre-booked service to make it worthwhile to run.

Would you please indicate your preference by e-mail to enquiries@allenbycoachhire.co.uk or Facebook. Then depending on the demand we will make a decision on Friday afternoon.

Just to remind everybody. Our coach would run:

Oxted – Sevenoaks Sevenoaks – Oxted
06:00 18.00
07:00 19.00
08:00 20.00

The cost would be £10.00 each way, collected at the start of each journey. You would need to pre-book your seat as this is a legal requirement.
